According to Sister Fannie Allen, Campbell’s history began on 5 August 1886 when a group of Christian believers met in the home of Brother and Sister McGuire at 995 Delgany Street in West Denver; there the West Side Mission was formed.  Campbell’s first pastor, the Reverend James Thomas Smith, worked and labored diligently with the membership which soon purchased a house at 33rd and Larimer Streets.  After renovating the property to accommodate a sanctuary and a living space for the pastor, the West Side Mission was renamed Paul Quinn Mission.  The church grew rapidly.  After Rev. Smith retired as Pastor, Bishop Thomas H. D. Ward assigned Rev. John Turner as the Pastor; Reverend Dr. Paul Hubbard was the Presiding Elder at that time.  It was under Turner’s administration that the Paul Quinn Mission was renamed Campbell Chapel AME Church.
 
In 1940, under the leadership of Reverend Bingham, the current church building was purchased from the Holy Redeemer congregation.  In 1969, under the leadership of Reverend D. C. Coleman, the church purchased several properties: a parsonage at 2815 Dahlia Street, a manse at 2801 Monaco Parkway, and a 24-unit Housing and Urban Development subsidized low-income housing complex at 22nd and Humboldt Streets.  In 1981, under the leadership of Reverend Dr. Ezekiel Habersham, the Richard Allen Foundation was established.  Members financed the foundation and then allowed the church to borrow money at low interest rates to finance further projects and developments.
